Horde Defenders publicly names Warden, Marksman, and Sentinel as its three base heroes. The developer says you can let a hero fight on its own or take direct control and play as that hero. A fourth documented hero, Vanguard, appears in an official paid pass with a heavy rail weapon, a shield that shoves the swarm back, and an airstrike that carpets the aim line.

That is enough to make useful control decisions, but not enough for a complete hero tier list. The public Experience description does not provide the base trio’s skills, health, damage, cooldowns, unlock requirements, or AI priorities. This hub keeps those fields open rather than assigning familiar class roles from the hero names.

Currently documented hero roster

Warden

Source: official Experience description.

Confirmed: a named base hero; autonomous and direct control are available at the hero-system level.

Needs in-game testing: weapon, skills, unlock, stats, and AI behavior.

Marksman

Source: official Experience description.

Confirmed: a named base hero.

Needs in-game testing: range, targeting, abilities, unlock, stats, and direct-control inputs.

Sentinel

Source: official Experience description.

Confirmed: a named base hero.

Needs in-game testing: defensive role, weapon, skills, unlock, stats, and autonomous decisions.

Vanguard

Source: official game-pass description.

Confirmed: heavy rail hero, pushback shield, aim-line airstrike, and access described for every save slot.

Needs in-game testing: delivery, values, inputs, cooldowns, and live interactions.

“Currently documented” is deliberate. The Alpha can add or revise heroes, and the public description may not be a complete roster. Use the live selection screen as the deciding source for what your account can choose today.

Choose autonomous or direct control

Autonomous control preserves your attention for tower aim, route changes, purchases, and ability timing. Direct control gives you the chance to position or aim the hero deliberately, but it also creates an attention cost: placed towers still fire toward the selected aim point. A direct hero action is valuable only if the rest of the defense remains pointed at a useful area.

Use autonomous combat when the hero is handling the expected task and your towers need frequent corrections. Consider direct control when the AI is not addressing the immediate threat, when a directional ability must line up with the route, or when the hero needs precise movement. Switch back when the hero task is complete instead of remaining in direct control by habit.

The exact switch input, camera change, interruption rules, and cooldown behavior are not published in the public description. Read the current control prompts. A desktop binding, controller button, or mobile touch sequence copied from another build may be wrong.

Manage hero attention beside manual towers

Think of the battlefield as three attention queues: tower direction, hero state, and ability readiness. The route closest to failure gets priority. If tower shots are traveling into empty ground, correct them before opening a hero panel. If the tower line is stable, use that interval to reposition or directly control the hero.

After every direct-control action, perform a short reset: look at the outpost approaches, confirm the tower aim point, locate the hero, and check the mission restriction. This prevents a successful hero move from causing a leak elsewhere because the camera or aim remained focused on the wrong lane.

In Vanguard’s case, the public description creates two distinct actions. The shield pushes the swarm back; the airstrike covers an aim line. Displacement can change where the group sits relative to tower fire, so recheck the aim after a shove. A line-shaped strike benefits from route alignment, but the best timing and exact width need in-game testing.

Evaluate a hero without a tier list

Question
What to observe
Why it matters
Does autonomous mode cover the task?
Target choice, position, and downtime
It determines whether direct control is worth the attention.
What changes in direct control?
Movement, aim, available actions, and camera
It defines the practical advantage and the control cost.
Does the objective restrict tools?
Tower and ability conditions
A hero plan should not silently break a badge attempt.
What happens when the hero acts?
Enemy position and tower aim afterward
Pushback or movement can change the useful firing area.

Record the level and current build when comparing heroes. A conclusion from one early route cannot establish the best hero across 59 levels, bosses, Challenges, Endless, or Workshop maps.

Understand Vanguard’s purchase boundary

Vanguard is listed as an individual game pass for 299 Robux on the October 3 check, and the Every Pass Bundle names Vanguard among eight benefits. Price and sale state are time-sensitive, so inspect the live checkout. The standalone description promises the hero on every save slot, but actual account delivery remains a live verification step.

Buying access does not supply a guaranteed win, a rank, or published numerical superiority. Compare the description you value—heavy rail weapon, shove shield, line airstrike, save-slot access—with the actual current price. Read the Vanguard guide and Every Pass Bundle guide before choosing between offers.

Hero mistakes to avoid

  • Do not assign Warden, Marksman, or Sentinel a detailed class kit solely from their names.
  • Do not assume direct control pauses, retargets, or automates your placed towers.
  • Do not publish controller, keyboard, or touch inputs without checking the current prompt.
  • Do not call Vanguard delivered merely because its pass is for sale or included in bundle text.
  • Do not treat shield pushback as free damage; observe how displacement affects the route and aim.
  • Do not build a hero ranking from unknown base stats and one promotional description.

Use the Hero List for a compact evidence index, Hero Controls for the autonomous-versus-direct decision loop, and Vanguard for its documented actions and purchase terms. Pair any hero plan with Aiming and Placement because tower direction remains a player job.

Heroes FAQ

Which heroes are confirmed?

Warden, Marksman, Sentinel, and Vanguard are named in first-party records. The first three appear in the Experience description; Vanguard appears in an official pass.

Are the first three heroes free or immediately unlocked?

The public wording calls them heroes but does not establish each unlock condition or save state. Check the current selection interface before claiming availability.

Can heroes fight automatically?

Yes. The developer states that heroes can fight on their own or be directly controlled. The exact AI rules and switch controls still require a current live check.

Is Vanguard the best hero?

There is no verified public dataset that supports that ranking. Vanguard has the most detailed public description, not proven superiority across every objective.
